My 2009 Challenge and Training Plan

Hope you like the new heading?

As promised here is my plan for 2009.

On Friday 20 March 2009 I will be 50 and I’ve been thinking for a while that I’d like to do something special over the year to celebrate this milestone. I started off thinking I’d do 4 ultra races and when I mentioned it to Lucy Colquhoun recently she said I should do 5 making it 1 for each decade.

So here is my 2009 Challenge – 5 ultra’s from April to December ….

(click each link to find out more about my plans for each race)

1st Ultra: Saturday 25 April 2009 – Highland Fling (53 miles) – Milngavie to Tyndrum
2nd Ultra: Saturday 20 June 2009 – West Highland Way Race (95 miles) – Milngavie to Fort William
3rd Ultra: Saturday 8 August 2009 – Devil o’ the Highlands Race (42 miles) – Tyndrum to Fort William
4th Ultra: Friday 25/Saturday 26 September 2009 – Hardmoors (110 miles) – Helmsley to Filey
5th Ultra: Saturday 12 December 2009 – Round Rotherham (50 miles) – Rotherham

I recognise that this is going to be a real challenge to complete all five and I may have bitten off more than I can chew but I’m keen to try. This will be my third year of running ultras and feel ready for the challenge. A lot will depend on my fitness and training but it will be fun seeing how it goes. All will be recorded on this blog!

So I’ve worked out my training diary for the year. I like to have a plan to work towards but I’ve never done one for the whole year before so here it is. It is on excel and I plan to keep it up to the date over the course of the year.

Basically my plan is very similar to last year up until the whw race in June, then I’ve tried to work out some rest weeks and then building up to the Devil’s race in August and then the Hardmoors in September and hopefully keep going until the Round Rotherham in December.

It will change over the year no doubt but I do find it helpful to have a plan to work towards. I’ve worked it out on doing a long run on Friday and then Sunday for our whw training runs. Again that will depend on work situation. At the moment I’m working 2 days full time with Active Schools and 4 half days with SwimTime. So if that changes then my plan will have to change as well.

I will continue to record my progress on this blog and look forward to sharing the whole experience in 2009 with anyone who is happy to read about it!

Hi John,Seems like a great plan to me – in fact I’ll be doing exactly the same! (unless I’m lucky in the TMB ballot, then I’ll miss out the Hardmoors). But I’m interested if even with your competitive nature you’re going to go for broke on all of them? I like to do events more regularly (will probably do the Wuthering Hike and a couple of road marathons)so I find I have to take some of them a bit easier as “nice outings” rather than all-out attemps on time. Cheers, Andy C.
