This year I have planned to run 6 times a week on some weeks and today was the extra run. I was thinking the other day it’s easy getting out to run when the weather’s good but the test is when it’s cold, windy and rainy. These are the days when you have to still get your gear on and get running. Well this morning was one of those days. I’ve not run in the rain for ages and once I was going I enjoyed it. It makes me realise my fitness is good these days as it wasn’t an effort to run today. I took it easy and enjoyed the thinking time.
I was thinking about the way my training has progressed each year over the past 2 years. The first year 2007 when I entered the whw race I ran about 40miles a week over 4 sessions and felt that I couldn’t really cope with much more. I was starting from a lower fitness base as I’d been struggling with a calf injury over the previous 2 years. My preformance in the whw 07 showed that I hadn’t really done enough miles ( I struggled over the last 20miles). Last year I upped my mileage to 50 miles a week over 5 sessions (especially Jan-Jun) and was able to run strong right to the end of the whw race. This year I don’t want to do things too differently but I am going to keep the mileage between 55-65 miles a week (with a recovery week once a month of nearer 30miles).
So this week was my first full week of my 2009 training plan and I’ve ran 58.5miles (plan 55.5miles) so I’m pleased with that. What feels even better is that my legs are fine and I’ve coped with the extra miles this week okay.
I can’t finish this post without mentioning Everton (look away Debs!). We are on a great run at the moment. Unbeaten over the last 6 games with 5 wins and no goals conceeded. Long may it continue especially with 2 games against Liverpool coming up in the next week!
