Route: From Kilbarchan Pavilion
Time Run: 51mins 11secs (7.18 pace)
This was my last run before Sunday’s epic training run. I thought it would be wise to give myself 3 days to recover and be ready to run for 60 miles.
There were five of us in our group tonight and after about 3miles we were down to Fraser, Davie, Stevie and myself. We kept a good pace going throughout the run and everyone seemed happy to do just 7miles rather than the 9-10miles we normally do. I certainly was.
I have ordered some hammernut products to try. I’ve ordered these three and will test them out on Sunday. I’m continually on the look out for any help I can get in the nutrition side of things in running ultras. So we’ll see what these products are like.
Here is the information from their web site …
Sustained Energy The Legendary Ultra Formula
Enjoy sustained energy hour after hour
Easy to digest, no stomach or GI issues
Reduce muscle fatigue and recovery time
Improve fat burning
Buffer lactic acid
Protein enhanced complex carbohydrate formula
Unflavored, neutral tasting
One of the original long distance fuels, Sustained Energy has attained a legendary status in the world of endurance sports since it’s introduction in 1992. Tested and proven in virtually every endurance event on the planet, Sustained Energy’s unique 7:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio, and it’s neutral flavor, is still the first choice of thousands of athletes. After about two hours of exercise you need to have some protein in your fuel or you will start to “cannibalize” or break down precious muscle tissue. So when your exercise goes beyond the range of Hammer Gel or HEED alone, Sustained Energy is ready to serve you, providing premium fuel complemented with specific nutrients that support enhanced fat utilization and lactic acid buffering.
Consistent, stable energy
Easy to digest
Minimize lean muscle tissue cannibalization

Thoroughly tested and proven in the world’s toughest endurance events, Perpetuem’s unique formula – containing complex carbohydrates, soy protein, healthy fats, and key auxiliary nutrients such as sodium phosphate – is unsurpassed for maintaining optimal athletic performance for as long as you want. Perpetuem provides consistent, reliable energy, maximizes stored fat utilization, and buffers lactic acid to prevent muscle fatigue. On the road or trail, Perpetuem is the breakfast, lunch, and dinner of champions. Take it long with Perpetuem!
Cramping is your body’s final warning signal that you’re “on empty” electrolyte wise. However, your performance is deteriorating and you are slowing down long before you feel the slightest twinge of a cramp. To keep your body’s muscular, digestive, nervous, and cardiac systems “firing on all cylinders” you need a consistent supply of all electrolytic minerals, not just sodium and potassium. Plus, in many instances, you require greater volumes of electrolytes than any sports drink or gel can provide. That is why Endurolytes fulfills such a crucial component of your fueling by supplying your body with a perfectly balanced, full-spectrum, rapidly assimilated electrolyte source, allowing you to meet your widely variable electrolyte needs with tremendous precision, hour after hour, no matter what the weather throws at you.
I’ll you know what I think of them as long as they arrive by Sunday!
Finally there was a post on the whw web site about the Adventure Show programme. The producers are keen to show those interested the footage before it goes out on the TV programme. It is being held on Tuesday 15th September 2009 at 7pm for a 7.30pm showing at the Behind the Wall Pub, Melrose Street Falkirk. It seems it will be a rough cut but it will be great to watch it with a whole group of the whw family. It will also be a fitting tribute to Dario who put so much of his life into organising this great race.
