Quick update on my ankle injury … I’m just back from seeing Matt Williamson who is a physio and most importantly a top class ultra runner! Matt was very positive and encouraging.
After asking lots of questions and feeling around Matt said it is a tendon injury and shouldn’t stop me running the whw race. Matt worked on the tendon with his hands, used some ultra sound and taped it up.
Matt also gave me some exercises to do which will help the healing process. We have agreed that I shouldn’t run again until there is no pain so if that’s right up to the race then I’m happy with that. Matt said I can do some cycling so that’s the plan.
Thanks to everyone who has commented here and on my Facebook post. I’ve really appreciated your advice and help.
The West Highland Way will be my 41st ultra and for each of the previous 40 I have done a fun ‘Guess My Time’ competition on my blog so with the race coming up soon it is time to open up the competition!
My friends from ultramarathonrunningstore.com have offered a superb prize for the closest guess – a Salomon 2017 Backpack.
Plus the winner will receive one of my limited edition key rings and have their name on my hall of fame!! What more could anyone ask for????
To have a chance of winning all you have to do is guess how long it will take me in hours, minutes and seconds to run the 95 miles of the West Highland way. The race starts at 1am on Saturday 24th June 2017.
To give you an idea of times I have done the race 6 times and here are my times:-
- 2007: 22:45:19
- 2008: 19:59:33
- 2009: 19:51:59
- 2010: 22:15:02
- 2011: 27:36:00
- 2013: 21:26:57
I’m not sure how much that will help as the last time I ran the race was four years ago and I’m definitely getting slower but the big question is by how much??
I have decided to set myself the following goals for the race:-
- Bronze: sub 24hrs
- Silver: sub 23hrs 30mins
- Gold: sub 23hrs
If you would like to enter please your guess by 6pm Thursday 22nd June 2017 by:-

Good luck John. I think the enforced rest ‘taper’ could work wonders. 22hrs 41’39.
Good luck John hope to see you there. My guess is23 h 56min 32seconds. hope you heal soon.
Sorry to hear that your ankle is still not fixed, still plenty of time for it to settle down so no worries. I’ll go for 22:54 as a nod to your 2.15xFling time stats you worked out a few years back.
Hi Robert
That time is taken. Can you add some seconds on?
John
